An exhibition supported by our Foundation is to open in Brussels

On 12 February, the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels will host the opening of the exhibition “Visionary Structures. From Johansons to Johansons” (“From Ioganson to Johansons”), which the ABLV Charitable Foundation supported under the auspices of the programme “Support for Contemporary Art Exhibitions”.
The exhibition is being organised by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (LCCA) under the auspices of the cultural programme of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), introducing an international audience to noteworthy examples of Latvian avant-garde art. The exhibition is being organised with the support of the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The exhibition, which was exhibited in the National Library of Latvia during the summer of 2014 under the auspices of the programme of “Riga 2014”, European Capital of Culture, has been selected to be exhibited in Brussels as a notable event that provides an insight into Latvian avant-garde art in the 20th and 21st centuries, i.e. into its most experimental and visionary artistic processes and historical transformations. The exhibition curated by art historian Ieva Astakhovska gives viewers the chance to discover Latvian avant-garde art through a dialogue between various periods of time.
Works dating back to the 1920s by the representatives of the earliest generation of Latvian avant-garde artists: Kārlis Johansons (Karl Ioganson, 1890–1929) and Gustavs Klucis (Gustav Klutsis, 1895–1938) are of globally renowned artistic value. In turn, Soviet-era modernists and visionaries: Valdis Celms (1943), Jānis Krievs (1942) and Artūrs Riņķis (1942) are virtually unknown internationally, despite the fact that they are shining examples of the innovative and avant-garde wing of art in the Soviet period.
The exhibition also showcases complex objects by contemporary artists Gints Gabrāns (1970) and Voldemārs Johansons (1980), synthesising art and science. Their art addresses phenomena, which, albeit invisibly, are present in reality, and it is intriguing to discover it in context of the exhibition’s overall visionary narrative. ”Out of Nowhere”, the work created by Gints Gabrāns for the exhibition has been nominated for the “2015 Purvītis Prize” and has been included among the last eight nominations.
The exhibition will be on view at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts until 31 May.
