8-9 September: Symposium “Cross-training: 10 Exercises to Shape a Museum”
August 22, 2016
On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the ABLV Charitable Foundation is holding an international symposium with lectures, panel discussions, round-table workshops, portfolio speed dating and artists’ presentations.
The aim of the symposium is to talk about our art and arts education support programmes together with our current and potential co-operation partners, keeping in mind our great future project – the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art.
The themes chosen for the symposium are directly related to the transformation of the functions of museums and other arts institutions, seeking answers to the challenges posed by the information society. The chosen speakers will evaluate museums’ ability to react to artists who have an increasing desire to work in a wider social context as well as the impact that the interaction between private initiatives and the state may have on wider cultural processes. Particular attention will be focused on issues that are related to the museum as a cultural history memory institution, a function that is under risk of erosion by “Disneyland-ization” tendencies. In the panel discussions we will focus on the role of place and belonging in museum collections as well as exchange views on research and the development of collections that are based on fluid and mobile inter-disciplinary principles.

The theories about the effect of various stretching exercises are therefore subject to heavy inquiry.
