“Contemporary Latvian Painting” at the Mark Rothko Art Centre

September 25, 2014

The exhibition “Contemporary Latvian Painting”, which is on view until 12 November at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, has been organised with support from the ABLV Charitable Foundation.

In putting the exhibition together, slightly overt parallels are drawn with Rothko as a luminary of painting, demonstrating the direct or indirect continuity and development of painting.

The exhibition “Contemporary Latvian Painting” offers some glimpses into 21st century Latvian art, as presented by the latest generation of Latvian painters, whose emergence in the Latvian art world is truly eye-catching. All the artists represented in the exhibition are original personalities with differing, mutually inimitable, individual stylistic traits; together, they reflect the state of Latvian visual art nowadays, its diversity and unifying zeitgeist.

Works by seven Latvian painters: Sigita Daugule, Jānis Dukāts, Andris Eglītis, Daiga Krūze, Viktorija Valujeva, Andris Vītoliņš un Otto Zitmanis are now on show at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.

Art critic Vilnis Vējš has collated interviews with all the artists taking part in the exhibition, which now accompany the exhibition in catalogue format.

Exhibition Curator: Māris Čačka.
