Late Breakfast at the Exhibition “...for an occurrence to become an adventure...”

The late breakfast is a meeting with artists in an informal atmosphere, offering the chance to take a tour of the exhibition together with its creators, to participate in a conversation with artists and at the same time to enjoy the artists’ favourite breakfast snacks.

Maija Kurševa is a graphic and installation artist whose harsh, surrealistic animation-type stories present protagonists with unique personalities and captivating life stories. In the exhibition “...for an occurrence to become an adventure...”, viewers can see Maija Kurševa’s work “Valley of Sorrow”. According to Maija Kurševa: “I dreamed up the story of Žanis, of how he ended up in this situation. Born of drawings and sketch blocks, Žanis is a character who appears in several works. This was my first attempt to describe works as stories. From then on, I continued to devise stories for my works.”

Evelīna Deičmane is an artists whose attention is focused on the secretive and impossible (seeing in the dark, life in the snow, and transformation into fairytale characters, etc.). Play, stories, testing out possibilities. She is the author of sound and video installations, as well as photographs and objects. In the exhibition “...for an occurrence to become an adventure...”, viewers can see Evelīna Deičmane’s work “Season Sorrow”, which was created for Latvia’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale. According to Evelīna Deičmane: “With this work, I’m creating a story in which I’m trying to explain how we live in Latvia. At that time, living in Berlin, I kept track of events in Latvia and the weather conditions that accompanied these events. It seemed like something’s got to happen. Great changes arrived – the economic crisis – and a harsh winter. There was a lot of snow and sorrow. This gave rise to a story about the interaction of man and nature.”

Alnis Stakle is a photographer with a sensitive and at the same time analytical perspective. His chosen human existential landscapes, even the most narratively least attractive – interiors and exteriors – are concurrently testimonies of their era and the fruits of a refined sense of beauty. In the exhibition “...for an occurrence to become an adventure...”, viewers can enjoy works from the series “Home, Sweet Home”. Alnis Stakle explains that “Private houses and their adjoining territories in small Latvian towns are photographed at night in the series “Home, Sweet Home”. This series of photographs is akin to an invitation to the viewer to sink into a collective dream, imaging the sum of individual and collective experiences concealed by the walls of houses and their illuminated windows.”

The exhibition “...for an occurrence to become an adventure...” introduces viewers to the collection formed by ABLV Bank for the forthcoming Contemporary Art Museum.
